Author: MICHIE, A.
Title: Narrative of a Journey from Tientsin to Moukden in Manchuria in July, 1861.
Publisher: London: Royal Geographical Society, 1863.

Notes: Michie's engaging diary format narrative provides compelling descriptions of 19th century China: the Great Wall, its small walled city -Shan-hai-kwan (Mountain Sea Barrier) - and the local Mandarins; the remains of Tien-mun-kwan; the frontier of Manchurai; Tu-cha-tai; Liau-ho; Ying-tsze; the old walled town of Liau-yang; the Buddhist monument and Llama temple at Moukden. Further features general observations regarding land elevations; climate; people - the Tartars and the Chinese; trade; military and diet.

Excerpt from the text: "The pass through the Great Wall has always been jealously guarded by the Government. A small walled city, called Shanhai-kwan, or Mountain-Sea-barrier, is built round the gate, the Great Wall itself forming one wall of the city... There is also a tower over each of the gates which are three in number, the gate in the Great Wall forming, as it were, the fourth gate of the city.. Great numbers of empty soldiers huts were seen outside of the city, but no troops were seen excepting the few men in the guard-house. There was a good deal of animation in the city, but it seemed to partake more of an official than a mercantile character... We here for the first time encountered the Mandarins, who seemed disconcerted at the presence of foreigners at the Great Wall, and, for want of a precedent, in doubt as to the reception we ought to have..."End Excerpt

Manchuria is a region situated in North East China. It is officially known as the Northeast. Manchuria is separated from Russia largely by the Amur, Argun, and Ussuri rivers, from North Korea by the Yalu and Tumen rivers, and from Mongolia by the Da Hinggan (Great Khingan) Mts. It includes the Liaodong peninsula. Until 1860 it included territory now in Siberia and until 1955 territory now in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region. Much of the region is hilly to mountainous. The Da and Xiao Hinggan (Great and Lesser Khingan) in the north and the Changbai in the east are the greatest ranges.

An incredible early report on explorations in uncharted regions of Manchuria - Spectacular with Colour Map!!!
