Notes:This is the annual address made by the President of the Royal Geographical Society. The address covers the state of exploration and discovery as of 23rd May 1864, highlighting the the study of glaciers, comparing the glaciers of the Himalaya mountains and New Zealand with those of Europe including Mont Blanc, Piedmont, the Swiss Alps, the Ural mountains. He also addresses the powers of glaciers in modifying the surface of the earth, and the agency of floating icebergs. The President discusses various explorers and alpine Geologists who have explored the glaciers in India and New Zealand, focusing mainly on the Glaciers of the Himalayan Mountains, the Alps, and Western Tibet, including Godwin-Austen, Haast, Moorcroft, Thomson, Hooker and Ramsay.

What makes these reports so interesting and crucial, is that a large amount of this information was never published in books, making this a most rare and fascinating glimpse into world exploration and discovery. Also featuring notes on South Africa, geography in Russia, Foreign Cartography, Surveys of the English Coast and the Mediterranean, and including obituaries.
