This is an original engraved ex-atlas map from an 1864 Johnson & Ward atlas. It is fully hand-colored and has a decorative border, the "banknote" style. It is 13 x16 inches ( 35 x 40 cm) and in VG+ condition with nice bright color and original margins. Atlas plate 64. Verso are statistics regarding the United States.
Important transitional map in the development of the trans-Mississippi west . SE Minnesota well-populated and divided into counties, most of which exist today. The Northern and Western parts of the state are less developed and boast huge counties. As an example, the Brown County shown on this map will be divided into six counties by the 20th century, one of which will be a much-reduced Brown. But the special interest in this map is the early mention of a Dakota, here divided into two un-named regions. The lower region, extending to about 45.5 deg N is bounded on the west by the Missouri, while the northen portion extends to the border with today's Canada and west to literally "off the map". Only town noted is Sioux Falls City, though there are two forts (Berthold and Clark ) noted along the Upper Missouri. Many other place names and notes ( see image for one of the more interesting of the latter). Proposed route of Pacific Railroad (Gov Stevens' version) shown. Excellent topographic detail, although not always accurate.
