SEE PHOTO----- COMPLETE ORIGINAL Civil War era NEWSPAPER, the New York Times (NY) dated Oct 31, 1865. Prominent front page headline: "THE SOUTH AS IT IS"  and LONG DETAILED letter with an account of a tour through the defeated South right after the end of the Civil War and during the beginning of  RECONSTRUCTION by a NY Times reporter named Benjamin C. Truman. Truman would write a number of DETAILED ACCOUNTS and DESCRIPTIONS of the DEFEATED SOUTH right after the end of the Civil War. This issue of the NY Times has one of his letters detailing his Southern tour and includes a 4 column front page detailed report on ALABAMA and its people in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War.

This is an EARLY FIRST HAND ACCOUNT of the situation in immediate post-Civil War ALABAMA.

Benjamin Cummings Truman (October 25, 1835 - July 18, 1916), was an American journalist and author; in particular, he was a distinguished war correspondent during the American Civil War, and an authority on duels.

When the American Civil War began, he became a war correspondent, then declined a commission in 1862 to become a staff aide to Andrew Johnson, military governor of Tennessee, and Generals James S. Negley, John H. King and Kenner Garrard. Truman is best known for his work as a Civil War correspondent. Through energy, resourcefulness, and not a little luck, he was often able to beat his rivals to press with important stories. During his extensive travels in the South, he sent many insightful letters to the New York Times, documanets that are considered some of the most important resources of the Reconstruction Era.

Very good condition. This listing includes the complete entire original Civil War era newspaper, NOT just a clipping or a page of it. STEPHEN A. GOLDMAN HISTORICAL NEWSPAPERS stands behind all of the items that we sell with a no questions asked, money back guarantee. Every item we sell is an original newspaper printed on the date indicated at the beginning of its description.
