Up for auction is a 1865 Two Cent Piece.  The Civil War left citizens with a lack of small cents in which to process day to day transactions.  For this reason, merchants began issuing their own tokens.  This caused concern because they were not considered legal tender.  Therefore the Act of April 22, 1864 allowed the issue of the two cent piece.  Although Longacre was the designer of this coin, it was left to the Secretary of the Treasury, Salmon P. Chase, to decide on the motto that appears on the ribbon.  He decided that "In God We Trust" would be appropriate, making the two cent coin the first US coin to bear the motto.
