  • 96 pages text

  • 95 plates in b&w and full chromolithograph color

Chromolithography by Timms, and an essay discussing practical instructions by Wyatt, list of illustrations, and 95 chromolithographic plates showing details of manuscript illumination in different states of development from the 6th through 16th Centuries.

A wonderful reference for those interested in illuminated manuscripts, in calligraphy, in early alphabets, or the design of pre-incunabula books.

The text is an interesting historical and practical look at illumination - whether on plaster, on vellum, etc.  This is followed by a List of Plates, which are taken from manuscripts dating from the 6th century (and available only in the Bodleian Library or the British Museum etc), to those 8th century designs described by Count Bastard in a treatise in the National Library of France and others, to the 16th century illuminations from the Etymologicum Magnum by Calliergi, and others.  The list gives detailed information on the location, origin, history and text of each plate.  The plates are absolutely fantastic.  The colors are bright and clean.  The illuminated letters, the alphabets are really incredible.

This 1866 early reprinted edition has been carefully preserved and is presented on CD.
