Steel-engraved titlepage and frontispiece + 35 steel-engraved illustration plates + 24 woodcut vignettes, all after Wilhelm von Kaulbach. All 37 plates with tissue guards preserved. Publisher"s light red half-morocco binding with gilt and blindtooled decorations on spine and black title-labels. All edges gilt. Spine slightly faded. Some foxing throughout. The opening double-sheet with old reenforcement to hinge, creating a 4 mm overlap at front edge. Range of owners" names (1870-1966) on front flyleaf. * Attractive copy of this first illustrated edition of Goethe"s version of the medieval folklore on Reinard the Fox, with Kaulbach"s renowned illustrations in all their splendour in a charming mix of Renaissance icons, sheer Romanticism and zoological authenticity. Includes the plate after p. 42 which were banned subsequently for moral reasons, showing farmer girls in their nightgowns while hunting a intrusive cat.
