Publisher"s light red half-morocco binding with gilt and blindtooled decorations on spine and black title-labels. All edges gilt. Spine slightly faded. Some foxing throughout. The opening double-sheet with old reenforcement to hinge, creating a 4 mm overlap at front edge. Range of owners" names (1870-1966) on front flyleaf. * Attractive copy of this first illustrated edition of Goethe"s version of the medieval folklore on Reinard the Fox, with Kaulbach"s renowned illustrations in all their splendour in a charming mix of Renaissance icons, sheer Romanticism and zoological authenticity.
