Scarce and Interesting 19th Century Review on the Following Book
Author:
FRESHFIELD, Douglas W.
Title: Travels in the Central Caucasus and Basham,
including Visits to Ararat and Tabreez, and Ascent of Kazbek and Elbruz - (A Review) Publisher: Boston: The Edinburgh Review, 1869.
Notes:A contemporary analysis of Freshfield's remarkable work,
which was published in 1869 and is now a classic reference.
A very enthusiastic reviewer outlines the magnitude of Freshfield's discoveries:
accounts of excursions to
mountains in Norway, Iceland, Sierra Nevada and France abounded at the time
but the mountain range of the Caucasus, designated by
the Russian Government the border between Asian and Europe, remained
unexplored. Although some ethnographic and scientific research existed,
little was known of the peaks and glaciers of its central range. Includes
descriptions of the mountains' general character, highest elevation,
and the ascent of Mount Kazbek, revealed through anecdote and quotation.
Douglas Freshfield was a former President
of the Alpine Club and an honorary secretary
of the Royal Geographical Society. He travelled widely over classical ground
in the Near East, for second only to his love of mountains was his interest in
classical life and lore. In 1868 he explored, with Charles Comyns Tucker,
Adolphus Warburton Moore, and his lifelong friend François Devouassoud,
the central Caucasus which, except for the lower heights, were then unknown.
He made the first ascent of Kazbek (16,546 ft.), Elbruz (18,470 ft.), and
several other peaks. After returning to the Caucasus in 1887 and 1889 he
published the book, "Travels in the Central Caucasus and Basham...,"
which remains a standard work. The splendid
photos of Vittorio Sella showed the world of the Caucasus to the rest of
the world for the first time. Some have said that Freshfield's text was as
important as the photos.
A rare and special item to pair with the collector's copy of the book!
