Extremely rare necklace and earring suite by Fontenay, circa 1870. Probably unique. Made around or just after the Paris Exposition Universal of 1867, Fontenay was a renowned French jeweler working in the Etruscan style and this piece may have been shown at the Exposition or inspired by works shown there. The necklace is amazing - made of solid 18K gold incorporating amphorae, lotus flower motifs, granulation, and filigree work. The enamel plaques show cherubs harvesting flowers and fruit, including grapes to make wine. The amphorae no doubt relate to the vinicultural theme. Each plaque of the necklace and earrings is surrounded by gorgeous rose-cut diamonds. The entire set is expertly made and finished. It exudes a degree of craftsmanship seldom seen today. Even the back of each piece is thoughtfully and beautifully finished. Resting in its original and equally rare tortoise form leather and velvet fitted case, the suite remains in excellent original condition (a minor crimp in one earring amphora goes unnoticed). Supported by its original braided gold wire chain, the necklace lays comfortably on the neck. Each independent and articulating piece gently moves and conforms to the wearer. High quality, nearly hidden clasp. The earrings are long and dramatic, articulating as the wearer moves, allowing the diamonds to dazzle and delight. Certainly intended for nobility when created, this is a rare opportunity to acquire an uncommon piece of functional antiquarian art with great provenance. You will most definately be assured of not seeing another, ever. So important is this suite that it was featured in the book Antique and 20th Century Jewelry by Vivienne Becker. "Museum Quality" is an ambiguous term, but certainly applies here, if anywhere. For more information on the House of Fontenay, search for "Fontenay Jewelry" in Google and perhaps you will find more information. If by chance any pieces are available for purchase, you will immediately understand the great value of our offering when learning the price. Do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. Our detailed photographs should aid in your decision, and the suite is available for viewing by appointment if desired. The necklace measures 15" long. Each amphora measures 1". The necklace plaques measure 1 1/2" from top to the ornamental ball bottom. The earrings are 2" long. 128 grams total. Nearly three carats of diamonds.
