Notes: An interesting scientific compendium from the famous geologist's important writings, specifically featuring his study of fossils, and with remarks on both Darwin's and Lyell's new methods of discussion to the scientific community, with a modest tone yet educational for a general audience. Providing a glimpse into the first edition of his book, titled "The Student's Elements of Geology", published prior to its release a few months later. This title was designed to reflect scientific advances and other changes since the sixth edition of "Elements of Geology", re-worked by the author himself.

"For several years this was the only convenient modern text-book on the subject, and it may be regarded as a classic." (DNB).

Still in publication today, Harper's Magazine was one of the best-known and most-respected periodicals of the Victorian era covering literature, politics, culture, finance, and the arts from a then progressive perspective. Harper's was launched in June 1850 by the New York City book-publishing firm Harper & Brothers.
