This 1872 antique print is in the center of a page of text titled "A Woman's Place", the illustration is by my favorite western artist W. M. Cary who lived and worked amoung the tribes of the northern plaines. The title of the illustration is "Old Squaw Pounding Cherries". The squaw sits with an enormous harvest of cherries and is pounding them with a stone as the dogs over her right shoulder look on. She sits in front of her tee pee as her brave reclines against the side of the tee pee smoking his pipe. The text is a very interesting insight into 19th Century view of the North American Indians and into the actual life and customs of these Native Americans. This illustration bears the distinctive signature of the artist Cary who was well known for his portrayal of the American west. The image size minus the margin is 7" x 9" with plenty of margin for framing.
