This is a trio of United States Fractional Currency Notes. There are Three Bills, one denominated Ten Cents, one Twenty-Five Cents and the other Fifty Cents. They are from the Fifth and last Issue of “Shinplasters”. These were released between February 26, 1874 and February 15, 1876.
During the Civil War people began to hoard hard currency, and coins, even pennies, disappeared. Merchants resorted to Postage Stamps and Tokens for change. The Government began printing “Postage” and then “Fractional” Currency to fill the need. By the 1870’s coins were circulating again and as the need was no longer present this was the last issue of Federal Currency printed under a buck.
