By Matthew James Higgins

With a Memoir

By Sir William Stirling Maxwell

7" by 5", lxxii, 252pp.

DETAILS

A full green leather hardback with gilt frame on the boards and gilt lettering and decoration on the spine.

A handsome volume. First edition and association copy. Inscribed to James Donald Cameron by the author's son. Ronald Lindsay's armorial nameplate is on the front pastedown.

Matthew James Higgins (1810-1868) was an essayist who wrote under the nom de plume of Jacob Omnium. He was educated at Eton and Oxford, and spent many years in European travel. His numerous papers, which appeared in leading magazines and newspapers, were principally directed against social abuses, and are characterised by a humour and pungent irony.

Sir William Stirling-Maxwell of Pollok, 9th Baronet (1818 –1878), was an Scottish historical writer, politician and virtuoso.

Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay served as British Ambassador to the United States of America from 1929 to 1939. He was the son of Sir James Lindsay (26th Earl of Crawford) and Emily Lindsay.

In 1909 he married Martha Cameron. Martha was the daughter of James Donald Cameron and Elizabeth Sherman Cameron. Martha died in 1918. In 1924 he married Elizabeth Sherman Hoyt, daughter of Colgate Hoyt.

James Donald Cameron (1833 –1918) was an American politician from Pennsylvania who served as Secretary of War under Ulysses S. Grant and in the United States Senate for twenty years.

CONDITION

The binding is tight and firm with the boards and text block securely attached. There is some minor wear to the extremities, including rubbing, bumping and fading. Internally the pages are bright and clean with the occasional handling mark and some minor foxing, which is more prominent on the first and last few pages. Overall the condition is very good.
