Author:
GUERNSEY, Alfred H.
Title: An Englishwoman among the Himalayas. Publisher: New York: Harper & Brothers, 1876.
Notes: The journey of a party of three, a married
couple and a single man, from Darjeeling into the Himalayas,
with description of the lofty peaks and a Himalayan tea plantation.
Interesting text on the Bhootia and Lepcha tribes,
their marriage customs, hunting and industry,
and also on the Lamas doing devotions in the monasteries at Pemiouchi,
just as described by Hooker in his "Himalayan Journals".
Accompanied by an interpreter, cook, servants, laborers to carry equipment and
clear the path, the guide and his numerous assistants,
the author's party of three quickly became a troup of ninety.
Excerpt from the text:
"The guide now announced that he had lost the way, and did not even know the direction of the
village for which they were aiming. The Lepcha bearers sank down in despair;
the bolder Bhootias seemed onthe point of breaking out into open mutiny, from which they
were only prevented by the influence of Tendook...."
End Excerpt.
