From an original in the Electric Books Collection,  this beautiful map was printed in the O.W. Gray National Atlas. It was drawn by Frank A. Gray who did many of the outstanding maps for the Gray Atlases of the period.

Accurate to about 1876 in the post Civil War/Reconstruction era as the railroads were beginning to expand again and the great Cattle Trails were still in progress, this fine map is full of detail. The Comanche's and Kiowa's were still a threat. Most of the Counties had been organized and were on the map but many were still not functional in the Panhandle, the LLano Estacado area and in the far west.  In Indian Territory, Greer County is notated as claimed by Texas in that famous border dispute.

Several maps of this period show Galveston which was the major portal into Texas, but in addition this map shows the Galveston Harbor sounding chart (Lower right) as well as very early images of the city of Austin(Lower left), a small map of the the River System's of Texas (Upper right) and an elevation map of Texas and Indian Territory at the Upper Left. There are many long lost place names and there are fantasy projections of proposed railroads that were either located elsewhere or never built.

This is one of the few major post-Civil War maps that shows most of the entire state of Texas without chopping off either the Panhandle or the western sections which adds greatly to the visual appeal.

A very large part of Indian Territory and a little of New Mexico is shown in full color and detail. The map features a very effect and attractive and is coupled with effective but subtle Handwashed coloring. This is in direct contrast to the crude & garish "checkerboard" look of many of its contemporaries.

The sample picture shown is at very low Internet resolution and reduced in size. It does not even begin to show the detail and quality of the actual map. All Antique Maps of Texas(tm) reproductions are scanned at 300+ dpi and offer fantastic resolution and detail even in reduced sized prints.
