1880 Hawaiian Kingdom Residential & Business Directory: This hardcover directory was published by George Bowser & Co, Honolulu and San Francisco in 1880. It has "an alphabetical directory of each island in the Kingdom with the names and addresses of all official persons and land owners, all businessmen, native and foreign, and of all white residents". Also, "a statistical directory of all holdings of land in each island, the purposes for which they are occupied, the proportion under cultivation, and their position in relation to the chief towns of the islands". Also, "a full description of each island, its principal towns and villages, its roads, scenery and inhabitants, and the available means of communication". There are full page portraits of the King (Kalakaua) and Queen (Kapiolani) plus a full page map of Honolulu. Also, ten double page views of the scenery of the islands (see my two pictures) which are: 1.Hanalei Valley, 2.Hanalei Harbor (Kauai), 3.Ailiiolani (Iolani Palace), 4.Queen Emma's Garden, 5.South Lake Kilauea, 6.Honolulu From Side Of Punchbowl, 7.Kaliuwaa Falls, 8.Portion Of Crater Haleakala, Maui, 9.Honolulu From Top Of Punchbowl, 10.Lunalilo Tomb, Honolulu. There are also a few text illustrations. There are a total of 690 pages with more than 100 pages of local advertising. Condition: The covers are tight and there are no loose or missing pages. The covers are well worn, but the advertising is still 80% to 90% readable. The spine cloth has been replaced and the old spine cloth (with the original gilt lettering) is pasted over the new cloth (see picture of the spine). The first few pages and last few pages (all advertising) have chips (see picture of typical page) and archival tape repairs - some of the chips do slightly affect the advertising. There is light waterstaining affecting the first 20 or 30 pages and the last 20 or 30 pages. The worst waterstaining by far is (unfortunately) on the portraits of King Kalakua and Queen Kapiolani - the other waterstained pages are much less affected. Although there are some condition problems, this directory is complete (with a few chips into the advertising on a few pages) and tightly bound - no loose or missing pages. If you are not completely satisfied, I will gladly refund the purchase price plus postage. Folks interested in the history of Hawaii and the genealogy of its families will find very detailed information in this extremely rare original (not a reprint) 128 year old directory.
