Provenance This print is from the very scarce first edition of The Native Flowers and Ferns of the United States, which was published in Philadelphia in 1880.  This print is an original and is guaranteed to be at least 128 years old.
Artist / Naturalist Thomas Meehan (1826-1901). Meehan grew up on the Isle of Wight, England, and worked at Kew Gardens as a young man. There, he met and was influenced by the well-known Botanist, William Jackson Hooker. In 1848, he moved to Philadelphia, where he became a nurseryman, which led to him becoming the editor of the Gardener's Monthly. The Native Flowers and Ferns of the United States, in four volumes, was his masterpiece, and is still one of the most impressive and sought after botanical publications from the New World.  More Information
Size / Format 25.5 cm x 18 cm (10" x 7").  The name of of the flower is written in Latin at the bottom centre. Under this is: L. Prang & Company, Boston. Prang was Americas best known chromolithographer of the period and, among other achievements, he is credited with inventing the Christmas Card. More Information

Each print has two or three corresponding text pages, which will be included with the the plate. A photocopy of the publication page will also be included.

Condition The plates are in excellent condition. They are bright and clean with only very light and even age toning to the extreme margins. The quality of the printing is surprisingly good -- better than the best Hulme. The scans are very accurate and are of the actual physical print you will receive.
