This is a first edition, first printing of "Boots and Saddles" written by Elizabeth Custer, wife of General George Armstrong Custer, and published in 1885 by Harper & Brothers, New York. It is one of the trilogy of memoirs written by Mrs Custer and is full of period information. 312pp. 8vo. (7-5/8" tall by 5-1/2" wide).
In the claimed "First State" as it lacks the map of Montana & Dakota.
Very nice Gold Gilt cover decorations on spine and front, not faded.
It is dedicated "My Husband, The Echo of Whose Voice Has Been My Inspiration"...... A Veritable fountain of information about General Custer, Life on the plains and the Plains Indian Wars.
This book contains a highly descriptive account of events during the Indian Wars including the U.S. 7th Calvary, various expeditions, Indian attacks, Indians, notorious frontiersmen of the day, the lives of soldiers and officers in the field, and many many others.
A few of the titles (but not nearly all) of the chapters include: Calvary on the march, Camping among the Sioux, A visit to the village of "Two Bears", Our new home at Fort Lincoln, Indian Depredations, A day of anxiety and terror, The summer of the Black Hills Expedition, Capture and escape of Rain-In-The-Face, An Indian council, Our lilife's last chapter and many more.
There is an appendix of extracts of General Custer's letters pages 270 thru 312.
This book describes in detail the lives of a soldier, of the Calvary, U.S. Seventh Calvary, Generals, officers, Army rations, Food & Diet, Indians and Indian tribes, Numerous Battles and confrontations, Garrison Amusements, Crow scouts, and a plethora of other topics.
Some famous and infamous people in this book include (among many others): General George Armstrong Custer, Sitting Bull, "Fool Dog" a Sioux Chief, General Terry, General Sheridan, General Miles, General Rosser, Chief Two Bears, Bloody Knife, and countless others.
This is a very graphic and complete account of a notorious period in American history, it gives you a feel for the period and the conditions thereof, although from the "White Man's point of view".

This book is in very good condition, a bit of shelfwear to the top and bottom of spine, the boards (covers) are in excellent, very good condition, with what appears to be pigment bleeding out of the mountain range below the setting sun. Gilt on spine is bright. The endpapers are clean and unmarked. The text is clean, bright and in good condition. The front & rear gutters are sound. All the plates are present, nothing in the text is cracked or loose or coming loose. A few pages have been folded at the extreme bottom corner (App. 1/16"). A very nice, highly presentable and sound copy. There is NO, NONE writing anywhere in this book.
