Advancing Backwards - a 122 year old print from the original by the famous artist, engraver and cartoonist William Boucher. Published in 1886 by Judy, as part of the ‘ The Journal was a 19th Century weekly magazine (similar to Punch). The cartoon reflects on the sad state of British weapons in a period when the Russia Bulgaria dispute may see the start of a major European war. The written article which this picture supports is attached.
William Boucher was an artist by profession, but his ability to capture facial expressions and the costume styles of the day made him much sought after as an illustrator. The print measures 11 x 17 inches (28x43cm) is titled, dated and paginated. The print is in very good condition for its age and has very few blemishes. As a centre spread, the print does have a fold line and there is print on the reverse however these do not detract from the overall quality and should be unnoticeable following mounting/framing.
