1887 BABBITT'S SOAP ROLL-UP CHROMO ADVERTISING SIGN

    There is text in a printed box at the top of the Sign that reads “B. T. Babbitt‘s / Trade Mark / Best Soap”. Below this box is text that reads “Cut From the Outside Wrapper the Above Trade Mark”. This text continues at the bottom of the Sign and reads further “Send me 25 of them in a letter by mail costing you only 2 cent stamp and I will send you this beautiful Panel picture without lettering. / Yours Respectfully, B. T. Babbitt”. The lithography is of the very highest quality and the Sign is signed by the lithographer - Donaldson Bros of New York. It is also “Patented 1887”

    This type of roll-up, Chromolithograph Sign was popular with Tobacco Manufacturers in the late 19th century. They would send them to retailers rolled up in small tubes for display at the point of sale. We have never seen this particular “point of sale” sign before and believe it to be very rare. The Sign is beautifully matted and framed using archival materials and techniques in an outstanding, 20th century, gold gilt & gesso frame (overall size is 21 3/4” x 36 1/4”).

    This rare and wonderful, Babbitt’s Soap Advertising Sign is in good to very good condition. The colors are muted (as lithographed) and the Sign displays beautifully. This exhibits some overall age toning and has some staining along the bottom edge. There are also some light colored lines that appear to be moisture trails at the top edge (see the scans below). There are no tears, or repairs. The blank border is visible on both side edges but is under the matt on the top and bottom edges. Although it lacks the original metal strips at the top and bottom edges, the Sign appears to be untrimmed. The very attractive gilt and gesso frame is in excellent “as new” condition and the Sign displays beautifully as matted and framed.
