With 101 Portraits by Frederick Gutekunst Jr:
Frederick Gutekunst (born 1831 - died 1917) was the most prominent American
photographers of his era, and was the a leading portrait photographer in
Philadelphia.
He photographed the most well-known business and civic leaders of the East
Coast including a Civil War photograph of General Ulysses S. Grant, and of
Camden poet Walt Whitman.
"...he has been ambitious to make photographs of men eminent in their several
professions, and his collection of negatives of distinguished characters
is probably equalled in few galleries in the United States. " Public
Ledger
"photographed more of the world's celebrated people than perhaps any man
in this country. Bulletin of Photography
"the Nestor of American photographers" Journal of the Franklin
Institute
Apparently Frederick Gutekunst was the photographer and photogravure engraver
for most all these portraits. His name appears at the bottom of all
the portraits. One portait includes his name, and also includes the
name of the Philadelphia Photography company Wells and Hope.
