Presented here is a decorative folder containing a collection of early photographs of various sites in Palestine by "Bonfils et Cie". COMPLETE WITH ALL 30 PHOTOGRAPHS.
All photographs laid on decorative cardboards - cardboards sizes: 12.6" in width and 9.4" in height (32.2 cm x 24 cm). The photographs are placed within a border line with captions & quotations from the Bible. All cardboards are well preserved. The set comes in a Good cloth folder, being 13.5" in height and 9.8" in width (34.5 cm x 25 cm).
Félix Bonfils (1831 - 1885) was a French photographer and writer who was active in the Middle East. He and his family moved to Beirut (then in the Ottoman Empire) in 1867 where they opened a photographic studio called "Maison Bonfils", which became "F. Bonfils et Cie" in 1878. Bonfils photographed in Lebanon, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Greece and Constantinople (now Istanbul). He died on either 9 April or 31 August 1885 in Alès, France.
Extremely good overall condition; one mount chipped; one flap to folder reinforced with tape; minor fraying to edges.
