..........the divine sarah...............
This is a wonderful 1890 photogravure of a Marcius-Simons painting entitled "Sarah Bernhardt as Lea Tosca" and produced by Goupil & Co. It's just an exceptional piece of artwork and is NOT a reproduction, it was actually produced in 1890 and is on heavy paper. This would be beautiful framed!
Size: Image: 6 3/8" x 11 1/2"; Complete Size with Margins: 12 1/2" x 16 1/2"
Condition: Image is excellent, as shown in the photos there is a water stain lower left -- there are some other stains around the edge of the mat -- these could all be matted and framed out and not seen.
History: The Goupil company, of France, perfected the electrotyped photogravure method in the 1800s.
Over a period that lasted nearly a century, Goupil developed and utilized emerging printmaking and photographic technologies to meet a growing popular demand for inexpensive art reproductions. Although Goupil & Co was centered in Paris, it opened offices and galleries throughout Europe, the Americas, and the Near and Far East. In doing so, it helped create the international art market we know today.
Many well known museums and library collections are proud owners of Goupil photogravures.
