1890 PLAINS INDIAN WAR CUSTER WILD BILL BUFFALO HUNTING

Description

FOLLOWING THE GUIDON

by ELIZABETH CUSTER

HARPER & BROTHERS

1890 FIRST EDITION FIRST PRINTING

This is a first edition, first printing of "Following the Guidon" written by Elizabeth Custer, wife of General George Armstrong Custer, and published in 1890 by Harper & Brothers, New York. It is the third memoir written by Mrs Custer and is full of period illustrations.

This book is in Nearly FINE codition!!! It would make a prized and highly presentable addition to any library.

It is dedicated "to one who has followed the guidon into that realm where the war-drum throbs no longer and the battle-flags are furled".

This book contains a highly descriptive account of events during the Indian Wars including the U.S. Calvary, Buffalo hunters, "White Scouts", Indians, notorious frontiersmen of the day and many many others.

A few of the titles of the chapters include: The March Into Indian Territory, White Scouts, General Custer's Letters Describing the march, Battle of the Washita, Indian trails councils and captives, Wild Bill as a Magistrate, Home of the buffalo, First Women to hunt buffaloes, Indian Prisoners, and many more.

A letter from Custer regarding orders leading up to Little Big Horn: "Fort Hayes, Kansas, October 4, 1868. I breakfasted with General Sheridan and the staff. The general said to me 'Custer, I rely upon you in everything, and shall send you upon this expedition without giving you any orders, leaving you to act entirely upon your own judgment'. The expedition will consist of eleven companies of calvary, four of infantry, and two of howitzers, accompanied by a large train."

This book describes in detail the lives of a soldier "they barter for everything", of the Calvary, Seventh Calvary, Generals, officers, Army rations, Food & Diet, Indians and Indian tribes, Buffalo hunting "shooting buffalo from (railroad) car windows", Numerous Battles and confrontations, Frontiersmen and scouts, White scouts, and a plethora of other topics.

Some famous and infamous people in this book include: General George Armstrong Custer, General Sheridan, "Buffalo Bill", General Sherman, Theadore Roosevelt, Wild Bill, General Miles, General Schofield, California Joe, Chief Black Kettle, Chief Kicking Bird, Chief Satanta, Chief Lone Wolf, Chief Big Head, Chief Fat Bear, Chief Dull Knife, and countless others.

This is a very graphic and complete account of a notorious period in American history, it gives you a feel for the period and the conditions thereof, although from the "White Man's point of view".

Here is your chance to own a small piece of authentic American History ! This book was published 117 years ago!! Theodore Roosevelt (future president) was a frontiersman!!

This book is in very good condition, a tiny bit of shelfwear to the top and bottom of spine, a tiny bit of staining to the boards (covers), otherwise the boards (covers) are in excellent, very good condition. The corners are straight and true, The endpapers are clean and unmarked with no cracks or cracking (there is a very small bookseller sticker on the FFEP and a former owner's library plate).  The text is clean, bright and in good condition, with no marking or foxing. All the plates are present, nothing is cracked or loose or coming loose. A very nice, highly presentable and sound copy.  There is NO, NONE writing anywhere in this book.

A very nice solid and highly presentable copy of this book.

Here is a chance to own a scarce, highly collectible piece of literary history listed for much more elsewhere online. This book is an excellent investment which has been steadily increasing in value and will continue to do so.
