Condition: A very small percentage of our prints receive a very fine/Near mint grading. This print is in exceptional condition with no surface rub, tears, stains or fading. The image is slightly offset which is common from this individualized printing process and can easily be corrected in the framing process. Although the scan provides a fair view it in no way compares to the intricate lines and high detail of the original print.
Beneath the modern village of Resina, at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius in Italy, lies the city of Herculaneum, buried under the thick layer of ashes and lava which has hidden it from the world for many centuries.
We are fortunate and proud to have obtained a large collection of original photogravure art prints from the "Galaxy of Art" collection originally published in 1894. The Images were printed on a heavy card stock/cotton style of paper. Photogravure plates were used for this collection. Photogravure is highly unique, labor intensive and rarely used form of printing from an intaglio plate etched according to a photographic image. It produces high detail and an array of tones that is unique to this process producing outstanding results. The images have been meticulously preserved and cared for since their origin in 1894. We have provided detailed scans in an attempt to give you an accurate feel of the quality of the imagery that the printers & original artists have provided but in most cases the scans don’t do justice to the original prints. These 113+ year old prints are an amazing example of the craftsmanship, effort & preservation of many talented & caring people. They were produced for your enjoyment and would look stunning preserved in a frame, adorning a special place in your home.
