Poetry By Karl Gerok:
Karl Gerok (born 1815 - died 1890) an internationally-renowned German clergyman
and poet from Vaihingen an der Enz, Wiirtemberg. He studied at Stuttgart,
Germany and at Tilbingen. He lived most of his life at Stuttgart.
In1868 was appointed first preacher of the court and chief consistorial
councillor.
He published numerous sermons, but is best known for his religious poetry,
which brought him much fame in his day. His other book of poetry include
Pfingstrosen (Peonies) and Blumen und Sternen (Flowers
and Stars). Durng the Franco-Prussian war he published Deutsche
Ostern (German Easter).
This book of poetry Palmblätter (Palm Leaves) was first published
in 1857 in Stuttgart.
Published in Philadelphia by Ignatius Kohler:
Ignatius Kohler was one of the three premier publishers of German language
books in Philadelphia in the mid to late 1800s, along with the publishing
companies of Schaeffer and Koradi and F. W. Thomas and Son.
Ignatius Kohler (born 1817 - died 1901) emigrated from Germany to the United
States during the 1840s. He was from from the former principality of
Hohenzollern, now part of Baden-Württemberg.
Ignatius Kohler orginally began work in Philadelpia as a bookbinder. He
continued bookbinding even when he was a succussful publisher. He published
works of leading German and American writers, including works by Schiller,
W. O. V. Horn, and F Hoffman. Kohler's publications were hugely popular
with the German-American community in the U.S.
Condition: Very Nice Condition: No library or
institution markings. No previous owner's markings. Pages are clean,
with only a few spots on a few pages. Lacks the front free endpaper. The
interior hinges are weak at the endpapers' gutters although the cover and
pages are securely attached. The cover's fore-corners are lightly worn and
the foot of the cover's spine is worn.
