1897 BOOK INSCRIBED by CONFEDERATE SOLDIER CIVIL WAR VMI GRAD
360 page, hard-back book, titled: ”AFTER MANY DAYS.” By Junius L. Hempstead. First Edition 1897, F.Tennyson Neely, Publishers.
Hand written on the 1st ffep is an inscription from the author to a VMI Classmate of his. Both men served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War and fought at famous battles. I will provide to the buyer of this book some research material on these two veterans of the Civil War.

Junius Lackland Hempstead, Class of 1864: Genealogy: Born- Nov. 14, 1842 in Dubuque, Iowa. Father- Stephen Hempstead; Mother- Lavina Lackland. Pat. Grandfather- Joseph Hempstead; Pat. Grandmother- Celinda Hutchinson. Mat. Grandfather- Dennis Lackland' Mat. Grandmother- Eliza Appleby. Married- 1st- Lavina Bell Blackburn, daughter of James Blackburn; 2nd- May Oliva William. Children- Hempstead had three daughters, one died in childhood, and one son. Their names are unknown. VMI Record: Entered VMI- Aug. 18, 1860; Dropped from rolls July 8, 1862; Made Honorary Graduate of the Class of 1864 in 1869. Civil War Record: Left on guard at VMI April, 1861; Drill Master at Harper's Ferry with Co. F of the 5th Va. Infantry until Aug. 1861; elected Lieut. of Co. F, 25th Va. Infantry Aug. 14, 1862; Severely wounded in action (shoulder) Aug. 29, 1862 at the Second Manassas. Absent, wounded, until early 1863; Captured May 5, 1864 at the Battle of the Wilderness; Held at Fort Delaware until Aug. 1864; Sent to SC as one of the "Immortal 600". Held at Fort Pulaski. Ga. Oct. 23, 1864- March 4, 1865; Released on oath at Fort Delaware June 16, 1865. Careers: Bookkeeper; cotton planter; author; poet; public official. President of the Society of the Immortal 600. Died- Sept. 16, 1920 in Jennings, La. Buried at Greenwood Cemetery there.

Brooke, Thomas Vaden (1864) -Thomas Vaden Brooke, Class of 1864. (Name "Brooks" in some records) Born- 1 December 1844. Matriculated from Richmond, VA. At VMI 1 year and 11 months. Entered VMI 24 July 1860. Military Record: Drillmaster in Richmond, spring. Enlisted 23 May 1861 at Manassas for 1 year as Pvt, Compnay D, 1st Virginia Artillery (Capt B.H. Smith's Company, Virginia Artillery, 3rd Company Richmond Howitzers). Returned to VMI early 1862. With Corps in McDowell Campaign. Left VMI 27 May 1862. Rejoined 3rd Company Richmond Howitzers 11 June 1862. He was a Cpl and was elected to, but declined position as, 1st Lt, Company E, 21st Virginia in September 1863. Paroled at Appomattox. Post War Career: Unofficial source says he attended MCV. Physician ("one of the few remaining doctors of the old school"). He was a Mason. Next to last survivor of the Corps that marched off with Professor (later Lt Gen) T.J. Jackson in April 1861. Died- 12 March 1933.

Book condition is very good. Has tight spine and clean text block. All pages have toned a bit. Covers show mild wear with some corner bumps.
