Vam Description: 1897 P Top 100 VAM 6A (Pitted Reverse) Popularity PF:7, R-6 very rare at MS-64 grade.  The obverse III26 the date is set further left than normal. The Reverse C3a has pitting to left below the eagles’ tail feathers and in lower left wreath down toward the "D" in DOLLAR.  This 1897 VAM-6A has a very distinct pitting on the reverse, because the die used to make this coin had significant rust pits in the lower portion.  This pitting occurs on the Morgan reverse where the side of the anvil or bottom the die accumulates moisture and then rusts the die causing the pitting on the reverse.  The VAM-6A is an extremely pitted coin to an extent not seen again until 1921 pitted reverse. Main Reference: The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties: The Vam Keys by Michael S.
