Writers of the American South

________________________________________

By William Malone Baskervill:

William Baskervill (born 1850 - died 1899) was a writer and professor of the English literature at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Baskervill ran the Open Letter Club at Vanderbilt University, with George Washington Cable. That organization promoted African American civil rights and education in the American South.  Baskervill was a native of Tennessee.

Writers in this Book:

This rare first edition presents detailed biography information about six Southern writers.  They are:

1. Irwin Russell:  Irwin Russell was born in Port Gibson, Mississippi.   He studied at St. Louis University. He was one of the first writers to write in the dialect of Southern Blacks. Later in his life, he worked as a newspaperman in New Orleans, Louisiana.

2.  Joel Chandler Harris:  Joel Chandler Harris was a journalist born in Eatonton, Georgia who wrote the Uncle Remus stories.

3.  Maurice Thompson:  James Maurice Thompson  was a novelist, born in Fairfield, Indiana. He was raised on a Georgia plantation.  He wrote about slavery and other issues of the American South.

4.  Sidney Lanier:  Sidney Lanier was a musician and poet, born in Macon, Georgia.   He attended Oglethorpe University near Milledgeville, Georgia.  He served with the Confederate signal corps during the War Between the States / Civil War.  He later worked in Montgomery, Alabama.

5.  George Washington Cable:  George Cable wrote about Creole life in Louisiana.  His work has often been compared to William Faulkner.  During the Civil War, he fought for the Confederacy.   He became a friend of Mark Twain, and they did speaking tours together.

6. Mary Noailles Murfree (Pen name: Charles Egbert Craddock)  Mary Murfree was born near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She is considered one of the first great female writers of Appalachia.  She is often compared to Bret Harte and Sarah Orne Jewett.
