This is a true Museum piece of ethnic African cultural art and religious lore. You are bidding on a 18th Century Parchment amulet from the Southern Egypt-Sudan area. It is written in Gez Coptic language. It contains a large illustration of St George and the dragon. Amulets such as these were worn by men or women, usually in order to ward off evil and to have children. Since I do not know the language I cannot say what is written in the text, but according to the description which was provided by the gallery in which this was bought many years ago, it says the following: "Illustrations were painted in natural pigments (juices, berries etc). Also shows magical and astrological signs in the panel above ST George. More information on such amulets is available in Wallis Budge's text on amulets". MEASUREMENTS: 2 ft 10 inches x 6 inches wide = 85 x 15cm. CONDITION: Excellent!
