Giving Works Item
About this nonprofit:
The U.S. Fund for UNICEF supports child survival, protection and development worldwide through education, advocacy and fundraising. For every child, Health, Education, Equality, Protection ADVANCE HUMANITY

Hello and thank you for looking at my auction!

The situation seems to at least show some signs of hope not just for Myanmar but for China as well. Aid is coming. People are getting at least some of the relief that they are desperitly needing. There is still so much more that needs to be done! Especially for the children! They not only need the basic necesities to survive, location of family to care for them, but the counsiling to grow up to be happy, healthy, productive individuals!

UNICEF has proven time and time again to make remarkable progress in doing this!

Therefore I have decided to up the donation amount of this auction from 50% to 75% to Unicef!

This 75% donation will work for reasonable offers only! If you are wanting to purchase this manuscript for the full asking value. Please let me know ahead of time and I will make 100% for the donation to UNICEF. Prior to your bidding!

ABOUT ME:

I can't (as I am sure many of you feel) stand it anymore!!! It is killing me seeing  the devastation, the pain, the suffering, and  the anguish on the survivors faces. I am a happily married mother of 2. This is the only way that I know how to help. Though, we were very fortunate that my husband works for the airline industry. He makes very little, as many of you I am sure are well aware. However we are VERY fortunate in the fact that we recently have had the opportunity to travel to Taiwan, central and northern Thailand. We were in Thailand for a month. We not only met many wonderful people from Thailand but many truly outstanding people from Myanmar.  I as a western person (and a Christian) know very little about the Southeast Asian culture, execpt that they are amazingly kind people. They adore children and love life.  I am ashamed to say that except from talking to people and the research that I have made,  I  know little about what the Buddhist religion and and the background behind it.

WHAT I HAVE FOUND:

I do know know that this is a white Parabaik manuscript and that it is from Myanmar. I also am 99% positive from the research that I have done that this is 19th - 20th century. It seems to be written in one hand and from what I understand it is written for what Buddha  wants based on the experiences that the Monk had witnessed. I acquired it from a small antique shop in Chiang Mai. The man had very little knowledge nor interest in it; as he mainly dealt with antique opium weights, Buddha idols, and Buddhist prayer cloths for soldiers.  I can tell you that we stayed at a hotel near the Bangkok airport.  There was a young man there that would run small errands for us. We would always give him a tip for doing so. I found out that he was from Burma  I showed the manuscript  to him and allowed him to read the text in full.  He knew very little English but said “It’s good, It’s good” the entire time he was reading it. After he read the manuscript, the rest of our 5 days there he refused another tip from us.  So I found other ways to tip him, by buying him food off the food carts that frequented often. I had planned to sell this manuscript at a more elite auction house. After seeing what is happening to these amazing people I know why god had allowed me such a magnificent find..... It is to help.

I have chosen UNICEF for my charity as I have in the past (2004 Tsunami relief). For the reason that UNICEF has proven themselves time and time again as a trustworthy, honest, reliable organizition. I truly believe that their allocation of funds is for to the greatest benifit for the people with the greatest need at the time.

ABOUT THE MANUSCRIPT:

I would say that this manuscript is in good to near perfect museum condition.  This manuscript is lacquered in red and gold. It has very few signs of wear for its age. There are very few worm holes and none that I see affect the script. The accordion type folds of this manuscript are in great condition. The pages are clean. I suspect that the reason for this is because it has what I believe it the original silk sheath to protect it. The only thing that it is missing is the ivory that is traditionally woven into the end of the sheath's string that carries the title of the manuscript. It appears to have been cut or torn off. Which is from what I understand is almost a normal thing.

UPDATE:

First of all I would like to thank you for your wonderful effort by helping people from Burma. Here is a few information about your manuscript(Parabaik Phyu, written on handmade Mulberry paper). It is a late 19th- early 20th century manuscript from Burma, specifically from Shan region, which is across the border from Thailand. Also it is written in Shan language(Thai-yai) not Burmese. It was originally donated to Buddhist temple as a study-text book for student monks. It seems like still has an original woven ribbon(Sar-See-Kyo (or) Pay-Sar-Htot-Kyo) & original binding cloth. The cover has hand drawn Shan floral scrolls(similar to Thai) decorated with 24K gold leaves. Hope this helps. Good luck & have a great day!   M.B.

I appreciate your support and your information M.B.!

It is very important for me as well as it's future owner. This manuscript truly is a work of art to treasure forever!

May your God bless you and keep you safe!

My thoughts and prayers go out to the survivors of China's horrible Earthquake. We pray that the children of  Du Jiangyan middle school are found safe out of the rubble and returned to their families soon.

GENEVA, 8 May 2008 – UNICEF has requested an initial $8.2 million for its emergency operation to assist the survivors of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar.

Children and women require urgent assistance to survive in increasingly desperate conditions. Initial stocks prepositioned in the country are being distributed, but they will not be sufficient to meet critical needs that include clean drinking water, shelter materials, water purification tablets, cooking sets, mosquito nets, food, essential drugs, and appropriate sanitation facilities.

Child- friendly spaces set up in camps sheltering people affected by Cyclone Nargis

NEW YORK/BANGKOK, 12 May 2008 - UNICEF is setting up child-friendly spaces in camps giving shelter to people affected by Cyclone Nargis. These spaces offer care and protection for children and young people especially those who have lost or been separated from their families.  Just in Laputta Township in the Irrawaddy Delta, UNICEF is currently trying to identify the parents of 24 children sheltering with people they do not know.

You know that I started selling this manuscript for no other reason than to help. I truly thought that there were people out there that were wanting to help. I thought that there were people out there that maybe just didn't know how. I truly thought that this would be a way to give them, not only a way to help, but a beautiful manuscript that they could cherrish and remember that they did their part for the right reason! I see how the situation is getting worse in Myanmar and in China. I see how the children of Myanmar are suffering, not only from the fact that everything they have known has been destroyed; Not only for the fact they they have seen their Brothers, Sisters, Grandparents, Mothers, Fathers, and everyone else that they loved devoured by this cyclone. But they are hungry, thirsty, dying from lack of help. There are not thousands of people suffering, but millions. China is doing things a bit cleaner, more controlled. That doesn't mean that they need our help any less.

The children from our friends in the East need us.

They will need us for quite a while. Not only Americans, British, Irish, But from Dubai, Austrailla, Africa, The WORLD!

The Einsteins of these devistated places DO NOT CARE WHERE THE AID IS COMING,
They just need to know that it is ion its way!!!! I don't expect the offers to be unreachable but I do expect more than a  $2.50-$12.50 to go to them! They expect more!

UNICEF IS A WONDERFUL CAUSE!

They can and will help. If you choose not to be a part. So be it. But they are are future! It doesn't matter if you like or agree with the governments or rulers. The people have nothing to do with our issues or theirs!
