This model was made from scratch and took hundreds of hours to build!!! It is painstakingly built by hand one plank at a time. As you can see from the pictures above, this model took tremendous skill, is highly detailed, and finished in eight coats of glistening hand rubbed enamel.
HISTORY: During the "Golden Age of Sailing's" heyday, the 1920's, many of yachting's elite had a passion for the sleek, fast, wooden sailing yachts boasting enormous sails, vigorously contesting one another for trophies and fame.
The grace and speed of the gaff-rigged NYYC 30 attracted America's finest skippers and crews starting in 1905. When the 30s raced hundreds of spectators lined racecourses.
The NYYC 30s still compete today. In the Mediterranean, an area experiencing a surge of classic boat racing popularity, a NYYC 30 is excelling against the competition. There is currently a fleet of four NYYC 30s still racing in America. Of the 18 NYYC 30s built, remarkably at a rate of one a week at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1905, 12 are rumored to be still sailing; a testament to the exceptional design and construction of Herreshoff.
The design of the NYYC 30 is well engineered and results in a very light boat for a 40 plus footer. Her displacement is just 16,000 pounds with the vast majority of its displacement in the lead ballast keel. This allows for lots of sail area and exceptional all around performance in light winds as well as a strong breeze.
