I present for your consideration this rare 1908 $20 Saint Gaudens No Motto gold piece graded GEM MS66 by PCGS. The condition of this Saint Gaudens is so superb that the bright luster is original mint and the surfaces are fantastically smooth and creamy. The devices are crisp and well-struck and stand out beautifully against exceptionally smooth fields. Truly, this is one of the sharpest looking Saints I've come across in some time.

1908 marked the last year of the ‘No Motto’ variety. In 1907 and 1908, a number of eagle and double eagle coins were minted without the motto of "In God We Trust". At that time, the coinage laws did not require the motto, and so St. Gaudens had not been asked to include it. With each passing year ‘No Motto’ Saints are becoming increasingly hard to find. With only a miniscule handful to grade as high as MS66 with PCGS, you are looking at a great surviving example of the 1908 Philadelphia mintage.

Numismedia.com currently lists a value of $3,940 for the 1908 Saint Gaudens graded MS66 -- yet I believe that the beauty of the piece offered here suggests a higher grade of MS66.9 and is closer to the $9,810 value of the MS67. Due to its history, scarcity, and superb condition, I believe the Saint Gaudens being offered here to be worth even more than the quoted value.
