According to the Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, examples of the 1909-S Gold St. Gaudens coins are "normally found well struck, with eye appealing luster, but usually in very low Mint State grades. It is apparent from the total number graded, which is well under 10,000 coins, that the vast majority of these were melted in the 1930s. Important auction results include a PCGS MS 65 coin (January 2004) $6,901... and a PCGS MS 65 example (August 1998) for $6,900."
