Aleister Crowley was born the year Levi died and subsequently claimed to be his reincarnation. Eliphas Levi's "Transcendental Magic: It's Doctrine and Ritual". Originally written in French with the title "Dogme et Ritual de la Haute Magie" (1855-1856, published in two volumes), translated literally as "The Dogma and Ritual of High Magic", revised to the current title by translator and commentator, by Arthur Edward Waite. Eliphas Levi, the pseudonym of Adolphe Constant, the famous French magus of the 19th century, was more than anyone else responsible for the renaissance of ancient magical knowledge. Waite described Levi as the most brilliant, the most original, the most fascinating interpreter of occult philosophy in the West. Waite, himself a prolific writer once served as Grand Master of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. A translator of classic occult works, his historical writings treat of magic, divination, Kabbalistic writings, and SECRET SOCIETIES. Waite was introduced to Levi's fascinating works when reading H.P. Blavatsky's "Isis Unveiled" where many of his quotations appeared for the first time in English. He then purchased a copy of Levi's "Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie" and began the translation. The first edition appeared in 1886. In the 1830’s Constant became acquainted with an old couple called 'Ganneau' who practiced witchcraft. Ganneau believed himself a prophet and a reincarnation of Louis XVII, his wife he believed was the reincarnation of Marie Antoinette. Constant joined Ganneau and became one of his followers delving deeper into the mysteries of magic and the occult. He took on the pen name 'Magus Eliphas Levi', which he arrived at by translating his first and second names from Hebrew. Levi first tried necromancy during a trip to London in 1854. A mysterious woman claiming to be an adept asked him to conjure the spirit of 'Apollonius' a famous magician of ancient times. During three week of preparation including dieting and fasting, he meditated on Apollonius and imagined conversations with him. The Ritual of Conjuration he performed consisted of 12 hours of incantations after which the floor began to shake and a ghostly apparition appeared. Levi admitted to feeling extremely cold and frightened and when the apparition touched his ritual sword his arm went suddenly numb. He dropped the sword and fainted. He claimed later that his sword arm was sore and numb for days after the incident, but that he was unconvinced he had conjured the spirit of Appollonius. In subsequent attempts though he claims to have called him up several times.
