In 1912 the Kenyon Map Co. of Des Moines, Iowa issued this commercial folding pocket map of Texas. Kenyon was well known for its good quality, well detailed maps of US States and cities in the late 1800's and the first part of the 1900's.
This Texas map was published shortly before World War I and shows the Texas Railroad system at its peak moment as far as expansion of rail lines into almost every city in the state. The popular electric Interurban railroads are shown as well.
In addition, Kenyon also decided to include on the map many rail lines that had been announced as ready to build or were building according to information supplied by the Texas Railroad Commission. Of course many of these lines were never built, were partially built, or were redirected one way or the other. This map is fascinating since it shows the dreams and hopes and schemes and plans of a part of history that really didn't happen or at least didn't happen as it shows on the map.
In any case, shortly after this map was published, a slow but steady decline in the number of rail lines began due to competition from automobiles and trucks that could run on the new paved roads that were being built all over the state. This is one of the few Texas railroad maps that really catches the moment when railroads in Texas had reached their peak.
We have added historical notes on Texas railroad history including the unusual features and shortline railways as sidebars to the map. those interested in Texas history and the development of industry, agriculture and new towns and cities along the developing rail lines will find this a fascinating map.
This map is printed on heavy acid free stock that will allow handling without smudging or of course it could look great matted into a frame in a suitable place. The map will fit nicely into inexpensive stock frames.
Note: All historic maps that we offer are 1:1 reproductions from the originals in the Electric Books collections. They are not downloads of poor copies from the LOC or public domain sources. We have invested in each map over the years and the maps we offer are accurate reproductions on excellent archival paper.
