Rare and simply wonderful, 1916, Card Mount Photograph of a fantastic Trade Sign in the form of a Giant Shoe with the men who made it in Peoria, Illinois. This outstanding, original Photograph measures approx. 6 7/8" x 4 3/4" and is mounted on its original Card Mount (overall size of mount is 9 3/4” x 7 3/4”). The mount is signed by the photographer - Erter Studio of Peoria, Illinois.

The Photo depicts three men standing around a simply fantastic GIANT Shoe. At first we were quite perplexed as to just what was going on in this Photograph. The Shoe has a Trade Mark just above the heel but we could not discover a Shoe Company of that name in or around Peoria. Our research, however took us in another direction entirely when we found the following article in a 1916 Popular Science Magazine:

A Giant Metal Shoe
“A PERFECT shoe more than fifteen times as large as the ordinary man's shoe, and weighing five hundred pounds has just been made by a manufacturer of Peoria, 111., to be used as a part of an advertising sign. This giant shoe, fifteen times as large as an ordinary shoe, is complete in every detail, even to the eyelets and heel strap. The shoe is made entirely of sheet metal and is seven feet six inches in height, fourteen feet long and four feet eight inches across the sole. It is complete in every detail, even to the eyelets and the strap for pulling it on, and is a perfect, magnified counterpart of the small shoe after which it was patterned”

We still are not sure who made the Shoe (the Trade Mark appears to include the letters “W.C. Co.” and the word “Crescent” but we do know when and why it was made!!

This wonderful, original, 1916 Card Mount Photograph of a Massive, Figural Trade Sign is in excellent condition. The Photo itself is clean and crisp with sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. Both the Photo and the Card Mount are clean and crisp and without physical damage. A rare and wonderful, ca1916, Card Mount Photograph of a VERY large, Shoe Shaped, Figural Trade Sign and a fantastic addition to any collection!!

Overseasshippping is extra and cost will be quoted at bidders request. Massachusetts residents must add 5% sales tax. Insurance is required on all items selling for $400 or more and optional on items selling for under $400 (but highly recommended. If you do not want insurance please let us know.

Important Notes about Shipping Charges and the eBay "Detailed Seller Rating" Star System:

The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee.

We have NEVER requested Feedback from our customers as we were taught that "fishing for compliments" was impolite but the new eBay Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that eBay bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller's "Star" rating. A monthly average of "4.6 Stars" (in any one of the four "Star" categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional eBay Fees - that's $400 above what we would pay if we had a "4.8 Star" average in all 4 "Star" categories!! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the "Star" rating system and remember that a "5 Star" rating is the only way we can qualify for eBay's fee reduction program. ,

Please Note:We feel that eBay's decision to remove the option for purchasing insurance on shipments to be both irresponsible and ill concieved. Due to the quality and importance of many of the items we sell, we feel that it is important that those items be protected in transit. As has always been the case in the past, exact insurance costs will be added to the shipping charges for all items selling over $400.
