1915 Steinway M Model. The soundboard is in perfect condition as well as the hammers, pins and strings. The hammers have some age which is what gives it the very bright sound and I would not change it for anything. Typically when new hammers are put in the tone becomes muffled and I don't care for that sound at all. The brightness of this instrument is what caught my ear back in 1983. The finish is Ebonized Black Satin and other than cracks in the clear coat due to age it glistens because I keep it nice and clean and shiny. It won't need any major work for many more years.
The serial number is 170653. It was delivered to St. Paul, MN on July 1, 1915 and stayed in ownership of a wealthy family until 1972. Then it was "loaned" to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young for about ten years. The band's traveling tuner and piano technician was from Minnesota and when not touring with the band he tuned pianos in The Twin Cities. The original owner of the piano then received it back from the band after they broke up and stopped touring. By this time she was in her late 80's and getting a little dementia. About a year later I bought it directly from her by way of the same tuner/technician because he tuned the piano I had prior to this one.
So, I am the second owner of this amazing instrument. It has a bright, dynamic, full and extremely expressive tone and I promise you will not find a better piano anywhere. The sustain will literally blow your mind. It goes on and on and on with the sound waves harmonizing and resonating with overtones so that it seems to never end. This piano can pound out volume like a nine-foot D Model. You will not believe this piano is less than six feet long.
The M Model was the original Baby Grand. It was first produced in 1912 and was 5'6" long. In 1914 it was changed to 5'6.75". Then in 1918 it was lengthened a quarter inch to 5'7", the same size still produced today.
It has a wonderful, slightly firm feel like most concert pianists prefer. It will include a Steinway Music Light as well as a thermostat and soundboard warming rod which has been integrated to lie under the soundboard. It simply plugs in to an electrical jack.
The Piano has been apraised at $70,000.00 it is also in mint condition.
