Review: "A textbook on mechanical drawing and machine drawing"
but It is much more!
It is a practical pragmatically, rational, function guide and instruction in how to calculate and understand and format problems and solutions in material stress, machine construction methods and design, weight estimating and more.
Often we find today author so "full of themselves" that they claim to be gods of their professions and try to impress us with their advanced math, their fancy pants language, and their ability to format the simplest of problems in the most complex of ways to justify their need to "be smart".
I can not think of a better reason to return to using books like this, guides and instructions that make things simpler, not more complex, that help us understand the nature of systems and designs rather than impress us with how smart some math geek is trying to be.
Written in such as way as to presume nothing, we are taken from elementary geometry and shapes thru drawing and understanding stress and strain and how shapes effect weight and outcomes and how to calculate all common needed weights, dimensions and machining.
Beautiful, simple, easy to understand progression that can turn any of us into great draftsman and designers.
Whether you have just had it, with the CAD tool you are using and ready to return to a simpler and happier life with manual drafting tools, or whether you just want to be better grounded in good basic fundamental skills you can use anywhere from the machine shop to the cad system, this is a great book.
Published in 1919, an era when folks actually wanted to convey practical and useful skills, this one is a winner.
By the time you are done with this you will be truly amazed at how you can manually draw and sketch advanced projections and rotations, how you can understand stresses and weights and accommodate for them properly in the design and drafting, and how much fun it is to put pencil to paper again and make beautiful drawings.
There is something earthy, spiritual, fundamentally gratifying about putting pencil to paper and creating something from your mind and hand.
From Screw threads and gears to material shapes and chemistry or kinds of materials to common machine design components, this takes us on a wild ride that ends up where in simple competence.
TO be sure you "got it" it ends with a test you can use to confirm your competence and body of knowledge.
I used to use this tome to train my drafters men and women who use the worlds most advanced CAD and Design systems, to remind them that they could and should think of and solve most problems outside the system with good knowledge and common sense systems analysis of what they are designing or drafting.
So whether you just want to regain that sense of control or you want to take your advanced aerospace crew to a higher more practical level of performance or you just like to learn things and understand how it used to be, or even you are a collector of the old tools for drafting (many of which were effectively works of art in their own right), this is a great tome to own, and READ, enjoy.
Enjoy! oh, and a pitch for the other publications we have, we are trying to selectively resurrect the best and most useful tomes of the past, take a look at ebay store
