Cunningham's Army Service in World War I:
This rare publication was published to create public awareness of the case
of Sargeant William Cunningham, an American Army hero in World War I who
exposed corruption in the War Department and was then sent to an insane asylum
to prevent his information from being made public.
Cunningham had enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1916. He served in England
and France in World War I. Throught his association with Franklin K.
Lane was admitted to the Signal Corps Aviation Section. He took part
in the Second Battle of the Marne. He was wounded four times in France and
was gassed. He received an award from French General Petain, and received
the Croix de Guerre.
Cunningham's Expose of Crimes at Kelly Field, Texas:
This booklet presents full details about the case of Sgt. William Cunningham.
In 1920 he was selected to accompany Captain Field E. Kindley from Mitchel
Field in Long Island, to go to Kelly Field, Texas, to investigate alleged
corruption probed by the War Department. They were ordered to Texas
by Col. Archie Miller the commandant at Mitchel Field.
Their investigation uncovered someone was stealing three million dollars
of Air Service property, including stolen airplanes and motors that were
sold to the government of Mexico, plus the theft of cars, airplanes, lumber,
tools, etc.
Cunningham made charges of graft and theft against army officers including
a colonel and a major-general. Shortly after this accusal, one of the
investigators, Captain Field Kindley, died in a suspicious accident while
piloting his airplane at that field.
Cunningham was then accused of stealing a car, in a trumped-up charge to
discredit him. He was arrested by the police of Fort Sam Houston and
was sent to Fort Leavenworth federal prison, despite the efforts of his Texas
attorney Diedrich A. Meyer.
Cunningham was driven mad at Leavenworth Prison, and was then taken
to St. Elizabeth's Hospital for the Insane, in Washington D. C. He
was "broken on the wheel of Army red tape."
Samuel Untermyer and VFW representatives then wanted an investigation.
Also included in the book is information in support of Cunningham by George
Reaney, commander of the Raymond A. McIver post of the VFW in Brooklyn.
