*1920s Tiffin Fruit Bowl Molded Glass Lamp.Figural Base

This spectacular estate find is not signed but is always attributed to Tiffin (US Glass) in any reference work I've found it in (and those are few and far between for this less common version of this concept).

It is molded glass that has been painted to glow with the colors of the fruit it depicts, and is set onto a figural base with painted lead or cast iron figures of women.  I have seen a couple different bases for this when I was looking through auction results, both very different from each other and neither one anything like this.  The base fits the glass perfectly, which has me thinking this may have been a specialty base created by someone (such as a department store or specialty shop) to use with the Tiffin piece.  I don't know.  The aging of both appears to be the same, the fit is perfect, and it's really cool looking.

The base has lost paint, as you can see, but the presentation remains stunning.  It appears to me that the lamp has been rewired with a newer light socket at some point. It has a turn switch built into the back of the base; sometimes it's harder to turn on than other times, but it does work.

The glass piece itself has been very well preserved.  I don't find any chips or cracks.  The underside has kind of a frosted finish that it look like someone started to remove for some reason, but it hasn't taken off the color nor do I see any effect when the lamp is lit, and certainly has no effect when it's not.  I have seen this piece described as being reverse painted, but I don't agree: the enamel paint appears to be to be on the top surface.  The coverage remains at close to 100%; I note one minor rub-out on the high point of the top apple.

The diameter of the glass piece is about 12" across; the ring that sits into the base is about 8" across.  Total height of the piece is 11".

A rare treat and a great find.  Don't let this one get away!

Payment is expected within 7 days of listing end.

eBay requires sellers to accept only electronic payment. We accept:

    • PayPal: we ship to the registered PayPal address only. We cut and paste the PayPal address onto the shipping label.

    • You may also pay us directly with Visa, MasterCard, and Discover

      International payments: PayPal only.

Illinois Residents will need to include 7.75% sales tax (sorry), unless a valid resale number is provided.

Please use the shipping calculator to see what shipping will be to your address.

Our shipping charge and method is not negotiable; your bid tells us you accept our shipping terms as stated.

Our goal is to ship as quickly as we can. Our goal is to ship within 5 business days of the receipt of cleared payment. It is possible, depending on our schedule, that we will only be able to ship one day in a given week, so if you need to receive your item by a certain date, then please e-mail before bidding to make sure we can meet your needs.

We're as anxious to ship your item as you are to receive it, but scheduling demands with our estate liquidation business sometimes causes shipping delays.

Remember that many items are heavy and/or large. The price of the merchandise does not affect the cost of shipping!

INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS:

We welcome international bidding on almost all of our items. We DO NOT mark international items as "gifts", and your purchase will be shipped with full value declaration on the customs form, marked as "merchandise". Please do not ask or expect us to do otherwise. We are not responsible for any customs fees or duties that are added on ... the amount we collect from you for shipping covers packing and mailing only. Transit times, and the time a parcel is held in your country's customs office, is out of our control.

We insure through a 3rd-party and therefore can insure even first class international packages: items over $50 shipping internationally must be insured. The insurance rate is $2.00 per every $100 of value.

Unless noted otherwise, our items are pre-owned and will have visual and physical cues typical of an item that has been handled and used.

Bid with the expectation that this is a final sale.

We do not sell "on approval" and will accept returns only when an item has been unintentionally misrepresented due to omissions or errors in the description. We are not professional appraisers, but work hard to identify all issues that we believe you would look for if you could see the item in person.

If you have doubts or need more information, then e-mail us BEFORE you bid, because your bid is a commitment to purchase.

Got a question about the item or about the payment process?

Please use the "Ask Seller a Question" link near the top of the listing. We do our best to answer all questions promptly. Give us adequate time to see and answer your message before the closing time.

Questions asked by other potential bidders might be posted at the very bottom of the auction, along with our answer to them. Please look there to see if your question has already been answered.
