Publisher: London: Royal Geographical Society, 1925. Item is in ORIGINAL Condition, With Blue Wrappers - As Issued, Complete with All the Ads!!! Notes: Bruce and Northey's interesting exploration of the relationship between Nepal's Gurkha Raj and the British government including its difficulties and potential, preceded by a sketch of the history of Nepal and the rise of the reigning Gurkha dynasties, a history intertwined with the area's geographical aspects. In addition to historical and geographical facts, Bruce and Northey attempt an assessment of what they describe as the 'extraordinary mixture of peoples contained in this strip of the Himalaya' and the 'establishment of the present dominant race.' Featuring: the people included under the term, Gurkhali - Brahmins of two classes, the Kshettriya clans and the pure Mongolian military clans: Gurungs, and Magars from the Sapt Gundakis, Sunwars, Rais, and Limbus from the Sapt Kosis. Also includes the pure Tibetan clans and the large class of hereditary slaves known as Kamaras. Excerpt from the text: "That part of the Himalaya between the Singalela ridge on the east and the Mahakali on the west is almost as little known as any part of Asia. Between these two boundaries lies the territory known as the Kingdom of Nepal - a name which has been given to it only as being the most convenient, and as representing the boundaries of the kingdom as fixed by Treaty. The name nepal itself is, and has been for innumerable centuries, confined to the valley of Nepal, or, as it is called in Nepal itself, 'The Country contained within the Four Passes:' to the east, the Saga pass; to the south, the Phar Ping (through the Mahabarat Range); to the west, the Panch Mane; and to the north, the Pati pass. Within these four passes lies the historic and true valley of Nepal, and these four passes separate Nepal from the outer world..."End Excerpt. Nepal is situated in central Asia. Landlocked and isolated by the Himalayas, Nepal is bordered on the west, south, and east by India, and on the North by the Tibet region of China. Katmandu is the capital. By the 4th century A.D. the Newars of the central Katmandu valley had apparently developed a flourishing Hindu-Buddhist culture. From the 8th-11th century many Buddhists fled to Nepal from India, and a group of Hindu Rajput warriors set up the principality of Gurkha just west of the Katmandu valley. Gurkha armies seized territories far beyond the present-day Nepal; but their invasion of Tibet, over which China claimed sovereignty, was defeated by Chinese forces. An ensuing peace treaty forced Nepal to pay China an annual tribute, which continued until 1910. Also in 1792, Nepal first entered into treaty relations with Great Britain. Under the Ranas, Nepal was deliberately isolated from foreign influences; this policy helped to maintain independence during the colonial period but prevented economic and social modernization. Relations with Britain were cordial, however, and in 1923 a British-Nepalese treaty expressly affirmed Nepal's full sovereignty.
