Notes: Mason amassed a huge amount of data from exploration of the Shaksgam Valley in 1926, an area explored at that time only by the only earlier Lieutenant Younghusband in the 1800's. This, his most important scientific survey, employed photo-theodolite and stereographic techniques and the results, plotted in Switzerland using what at the time was the world's most advanced stereo plotting machine, were acclaimed as brilliantly successful winning him the award of the 1927 Royal Geographic Society Founder's Medal. Here, Mason provides a detailed narrative comprising Francis Younghusband's earlier achievements, the nature of theodolite methodology and reconnaissance details of Teram Kangri, the Kyagar glacier and the Shaksgram Valley, Lungpa Marpo from Station W8; the Aghil Ridges above the Sa Lungpa Gorge, Gasherbrum I and Staircase Peak from the Tatar La from Station W15. Also features Mason's geographical observations and conclusions relating to the Muztagh or Karakoram Range, the source of the Shaksgam, the Kyagar Glacier and Lake, the Shaksgam below the Kyagar Glacier, the head of the Lungmo-chhe and the Sa Lungpa, the country north of the Lungmo-chhe and Sa Lungpa, the Aghil Depsang and the extension of the Aghil Range, in addition to appendices listing notes on names, featured map and an excellent photographic record.

Mason spent 25 years with the Survey of India, later becoming editor of the Himalayan Journal. Neate describes his present work as 'the most authoritative reference source on the historical and geographical background to the entire Himalayan range, with a remarkably concise and comprehensive history of Himalayan Exploration'.

Condition: 44 pages, including an in-text sketch map. Plus black and white plates and a large fold-out color map measuring approximately 16 inches x 18 inches. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Repaired tear to map seam, unobtrusive to the illustration. Annotation to front wraps, otherwise in Very Good condition, internally clean with bright color map.
