I first want to start off by saying that this is the only diary I have from this particular author. If I had others from this family, I would sell them as a lot as I do not split up family lots. I only say this because I often get questions, which are good ones to ask I might add, about splitting up lots.

Although this diaries entries only run from January 1st, 1928 to July 12th, 1928, what entries there are show in nice detail the life of a young man (William C. Sweitzer) in his senior year at (I think) Elizabethtown College. He doesn’t really say the name of the college but in the first entry that I quoted from, January 3rd , he talks about arriving at E. Town for college. Also he lives in Pennsylvania and mentions Lebanon, Lancaster, and Fleetwood so I was just assuming it’s Elizabethtown.

Before you get to the handwritten pages you’ll find 160 pages of vintage ads which is an added bonus. I’ve taken a few entries and quoted them here to give you an idea of the contents……

1928

“January 3rd,

I arose rather early this morn. Packed for College. Sam took me to N.F. in the Hudson. Received card and letter from Belle in Detroit. Took train for E. Town. Arrived E. T. 12:40. Spent few minutes at Wise’s. Everybody seemed happy after vacation. Skated from 3 to 4:30. Ice is fine for skating.”

“January 7th,

Arose at 8:15 this morning. Went to the library then studied and slept 1 hr. in the afternoon. In the evening Belle and I chaperoned a group on a moonlight hike among Masonic Home. Had a delightful time. Retired 10:45.”

“February 8th,

Art Moore arrived at college today. Was very busy. Went to prayer meeting this evening. Moore spoke on “The Science of the Christian Life.” I called boys meeting in new YMCA room. Had a fine informal discussion with Art Moore.”

“February 9th,

Heavy class work. Moore spoke in chapel on Oxford life. This eve. Andy Roy arrived. New radio was put up in YMCA room, cost $216.00.”

“February 25th,

Rose at 8:10. Lady had breakfast for us. Good. Went to Gettysburg conference. Commission meetings at 10:30 and 11:45. Nothing doing at this conference. Dinner 12. Saw Fred Liebel. Went up to seminary in p.m. Enjoyable time. Supper 6:30 banquet. Not a great deal to eat. Commission meeting after supper. A lot of bunk. Thoroughly disgusted. No prayer, etc. Ella had a man. Ester too. Results of the conference; 1) Thoroughly disgusted 2) Money spent without good gains 3) Nothing much of anything on my speech.”

“March 8th,

Got up for breakfast. Attended 4 classes. Missed Latin and public speaking. Went to sale near Hershey to see Amish play corner ball. Most spectacular sight.

Belle and I chaperoned 11 couples to town to see Daddy Long Legs. A play given by High School.”

“March 30th,

Went home with faculty members to attend Uncle J. H. Keller’s funeral. Church was packed. About 40 preachers were present. Sam Godfrey preached. Text was “ A Great Man has fallen.” Went home. Went to New Freedom to see H. S. play. Was with Cleo after program. Nelson and Carroll were along.”

“April 5th,

Left for Easter vacation this morn, 10:58. Belle and another group left. Belle gave me her Easter letter. It was more precious than any letters I have ever received. I returned one to her. Expect to see her Easter. Arrived home at 3 o’clock. Went out and plowed until supper. Farm looks same as usual.”

“April 8th,

Went to church this morn. J. L. Myers preached. Went up to Belle’s place in Hudson this p.m. Left 1 o’clock arrived 10 of 3. We went down to old mill and then up the mountains to see scenery and wild flowers. I will remember the little creek and the precious time we had together. We decided to write a poem. Went back and had a fine supper. After which we went to Carlisle to church. Then went to a communion service but soon left. Left her place 11:20 p.m. and had a perfect Easter. Arrived home 12:50.”

“May 20th,

Up for breakfast. Went to S.S. and church. This evening at 4 o’clock a group left for deputation work near Carlisle. Belle, Ester, Ruth, Elias, and myself composed the sextets. We had a wonderful trip. Belle planned the eats. We ate on top of the mountain. We gathered some wild flowers. Met many people at church. Belle’s mother and brother were there. I shall never forget this trip and Bro. Miller.”

“May 28th,

Commencement day. 35 graduated. Dr. ____ of Westminster College gave the address. Dad, mother, and Carroll were over. Belle’s mother, brother and Hassinger’s. Almost decided to go to California. Dad and mom stayed to see Belle off and I left with Elmer Wise, Ella and Raymond. Was at their place a short while. They arrived home at 9:15. Now it is over. Sorry with way Belle and I exchanged letters.”

This next part he recorded on May’s Memoranda page.

“This is the most enjoyable and happiest month I have ever spent in my whole life. I could not have been happier. It is the crowning month of my whole 4 years spent in college. The friendships I have formed, the opportunities I had for service and helping others and the spirit of brother kindness that was shown to me by others is far beyond any thing I had dreamed of. I shall never forget the wonderful boy friends that I have made here at college as well as the girl friends. Belle has had a wonderful influence in my life. I know I shall not be forgotten to her while I am away from school.”

“July 4th,

Red letter day. Carroll and I left at 5:30 this morn for Allen where we met Belle and Pearl. Arrived 7 o’clock. Surprised to see Mary Hykes there. She went along on a trip. We went to Harper’s Ferry W. Va. Was in 4 states, Va., W. Va., Md., and Pa. Saw Barbara _____ home. Was in Mary’s home at Hagerstown. Got in a thunder storm. Stopped at farm house. Arrived in Carlisle at 7 o’clock this eve. Saw a great display of fireworks. Left Belle’s 11:45 .m. A day long to be remembered. Arrived home 1:30. 48 ½ miles.”

The diary measures about 5 ¼” x 7 ¼” and remember it’s only about ½ full of entries. It’s also in fair condition. Please email me with any questions.

I wish to have payment within 7 days of the auctions end. I will also add insurance if you'd like, but it's optional. As far as shipping to Italy, I've been having problems so if you do want a package shipped there it will have to go Fedex or UPS only. All other places can be shipping normal USPS.
