This breathtaking 1928 Saint Gaudens gold gem would make not only a beautiful addition to any Saint Gaudens collection, but an excellent upside opportunity. Warm and well-struck, this smooth, velvety gold piece shines with a rich autumn hue and is an absolute pleasure to look at. The devices are prominent and feature lots of wonderful detail on both the obverse and reverse, from Liberty's robe to the eagle's wings and the bright, triumphant rays of the rising sun.
Back in 1928, the Philadelphia Mint produced over 8.8 million Saint Gaudens gold Double Eagles, however over the years most of this mintage was either lost to circulation or melted down for reuse during the massive bullion melts of the 1930's. As only a small fraction has survived to the present day, collectors tend to hang on to Mint State specimens, which makes finding gems like this one such a hard task. As of today, PCGS has only graded a small number of 1928-P Saint Gaudens at MS66, and only 65 have graded higher (all at MS67)!
PCGS currently lists a conservative value of $4,350 for the 1928 MS66 Saint Gaudens.
Consider that the next grade (MS67) is priced at $15,000, and you'll see that the MS66 is not only a great buy, but has fantastic upside potential.
