1930 Hollywood Blvd.
Map
"From Shop to Shop on Hollywood Blvd. - The World's Most Colorful Way"
Created by Cormac E. Mc Connell
The "Crown Jewel" of Cormac Mc Connell's body of work (See bio below).
There is only one, and this is IT.
This map is 8 feet wide and 2 1/2 feet high!
A truly amazing record of the Hollywood Blvd. environment in 1930. Included are the names and locations of famous restaurants like Musso and Frank and the Pig N' Whistle, which are still serving celebrities and fans alike. Popular Hollywood spots like the Chinese Theatre, Hollywood and Vine, the Hotel Roosevelt, Max Factor Make Up, El Capitan Theatre and the Pantages Theatre are shown.
And did you know that in 1930, Clubb's Tobacco was right next to Walsh's Haberdasher which was next to Camielle's Hats? Across the street from the Warner Bros. theatre was a new Sees Candy store of which only 12 existed at the time (now there are over 200 in the west and they are owned by Warren Buffett's Bershire Hathaway).
The I. Magnin shop shown at Ivar and Hollywood Blvd., was opened in 1923 and remodeled in 1930 (it closed in 1939). During Hollywood's Golden Era, I. Magnins on Hollywood was frequented by Bette Davis, Esther Williams, Greta Garbo, Greer Garson and the Andrew Sisters to name a few of the celebrity clients.

The map was created on waxed linen, a very durable material. The map still retains it's suppleness and sheen. There is some foxing as shown in photos. A master map like this one would have been used to make sepia copies. There is one full size sepia copy in the collection I acquired, that may be at auction shortly. There were several reduced size copies that were auctioned on Ebay last year to celebrities and collectors of entertainment memorabilia.
About Cormac Mc Connell (1894-1979) - Born in Ireland in 1894, Cormac studied to be an economist and a civil engineer. Over a 45 year career starting in 1926, he provided clients with economic surveys and consulted with them regarding shopping center development. His focus was mostly on real estate hot spots such as: Beverly Hills, Hollywood Blvd., Santa Monica, Westwood, Newport Beach, Anaheim, Pasadena, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Santa Barbara and many areas in Northern California. During the 1930's he was hired to create appraisals for orange and lemon grove owners that included maps and grove production analysis. He also used his talents to create tourist maps of Hollywood (1930) and Palm Springs. He was also the first to print maps to the stars homes in the 1920's. Oil painting was his hobby and large canvases of the Grand Canyon are part of his legacy. I have acquired the body of his work and will be offering these unique maps and surveys on Ebay over the next several months. Copyright is held by the seller.
