Information taken from the Owens Illinois website: The
Owens Bottle Company was created in 1903. That was the year Michael J.
Owens invented the automatic bottle-making machine, revolutionizing the
entire glass-making industry with its most important development in
more than 2,000 years. Not since the invention of the blowpipe in 50
B.C. had the world of glass been transformed by such brilliance and
innovation. Upon the invention of his machine in 1903, Owens formed the
Owens Bottle Company and began production in Perrysburg, Ohio.
In 1929,
the Owens Bottle Company merged with the Illinois Glass Company to form
the Owens-Illinois Glass Company. In 1965, the corporate name was
changed to Owens-Illinois, Inc., (O-I) to reflect the company's broader
range of operations, including its successful entry into plastics
package manufacturing.
