This is one of many items for sale at Kennesaw Coins. I grade my coins to the standards of the American Numismatic Association. Grading is in the eye of the beholder so I include high resolution scans or pictures of the actual coin you will receive. Buffalo Nickels were minted from 1916–1938. They replaced the Libety Head "V" Nickel as part of a total coinage update led begun by President Teddy Roosevelt. The front of the coin features an Indian most likely a composite of three live models - Irna Tail, Big Tree, & Two Moons. The buffalo depicted on the reverse is believed to be Black Diamond who was in the NY Central Park zoo when the coin was designed.
Soon after the Indian Head nickel went into circulation, it became obvious that the design was problematic; the "FIVE CENTS" inscription, which was on a raised mound at the bottom of the reverse, was one of the highest spots on the coin, and thus wore away very quickly. As a result, the design was modified by Charles Barber during its first year of production. Barber removed the raised mound and lowered the relief of the inscription so that it would not wear away as quickly. One problem that remained was the Date which wore quickly. not This issue was never definitively addressed by the Mint, so many Indian Head nickels so only partially dates or no date at all.
