1934 SUPREME COURT JUDGE CHARLES E. HUGHES SIGNED ART

Rare and simply fantastic, 1934 Pencil Caricature Drawing of United States Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes - autographed by The Chief Justice himself!!! Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948) served as Governor of New York (1907-1910), United States Secretary of State (1921-1925), Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (1910-1916) and Chief Justice of the United States (1930-1941). He was the Republican candidate in the 1916 U.S. Presidential election, losing to Woodrow Wilson. As Chief Justice, he led the fight against Franklin D. Roosevelt's attempt to pack the Supreme Court. He wrote the opinion for the Court in Near v. Minnesota 283 U.S. 697 (1931), which held prior restraints against the press are unconstitutional. He was often aligned with Justices Louis Brandeis, Harlan Fiske Stone, and Benjamin Cardozo in finding President Roosevelt's New Deal measures to be Constitutional.

This wonderful, hand drawn caricature sketch is executed on a sheet of drawing paper measuring approx. 8 1/2" x 11" and is signed by the artist “G.A.I. ‘34” (we have no idea who the artist is). The sheet was signed by Chief Justice Hughes below and to the right of the drawing. The signature is VERY large and bold and is dated Oct. 13, 1934 (not in Hughes hand).

This is simply a fantastic drawing executed with bold strokes and rich shading. It is signed boldly "Charles E. Hughes". The drawing is in very good condition - very attractive with two, unobtrusive horizontal fold and light edge wear.
